Edgar Allan Poe was orphaned at the age of three and adopted by a wealthy Virginia family with whom he had a troubled relationship. He excelled in his studies of language and literature at school, and self-published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in In , Poe embarked on a career as a writer and began contributing reviews and essays to popular periodicals.
He also wrote sketches and short fiction, and in published his only completed novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Over the next five years he established himself as a master of the short story form through the publication of "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Tell-tale Heart," and other well-known works. In , he wrote "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," generally considered the first modern detective story. The publication of The Raven and Other Poems in brought him additional fame as a poet.
All of the positive reviews here make me believe that either I'm missing something obvious or that the Kindle edition which seems to be what most of these reviews are based on is far superior to the paperback edition. I ordered this book as a birthday gift for my fiance. I wanted to get him a complete collection of Poe's stories and poems. Nothing fancy, just something basic yet inclusive.
We received this book, and it was NOT a collection of Poe's works as it states. Further, I'm aware this is a digital reconstruction, but a huge number of pages in the book had text that was completely illegible. I almost never leave reviews, but we were extremely disappointed with this product and sent it back for a refund.
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase. The book is a joy to read. Poe was a brilliant man who wrote in an ornate style showing his great erudition, love of science and the possibilities of life after death.
This edition is almost pages and will keep you flipping the pages with wonder and literary appreciation. A five star classic! I am surprised that amazon allows this to be sold on their site.. And it is NOT Poe's complete works since his complete poems are not there. I am unable to return this worthless piece of junk since i am housebound, but from now on will be hesitant about buying books on amazon if they allow such poor quality. Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Ultimately, I recommend this one, noting that all have pluses and minuses.
This is a great supposedly complete collection with quality formatting and an interactive table of contents that lists the stories alphabetically, as well as by year. Having both makes it easy to put Poe's writings in perspective chronologically, while maintaining easy navigation. By the way, if you sample the book, you need to select "cover" in the "go to" menu to see the full ToC.
In death - no! Ligeia Ugh. The Complete Stories Hardback. Not only did he invent a manner of writing, but he explained fairly insightfully what he was trying to accomplish, so that others could follow in his footsteps. Some stories are so short that they seem almost pointless.
Just page after the cover. You won't find a biography here, but those of us who love Poe already know it and those who don't will be able to find satisfying bios on the web. The only true negative that kept me from giving this 5 stars is the lack of annotations for various foreign phrases. The other inexpensive Poe collections appear to suffer the same omission but nonetheless, it would have been nice.
Definition annotations remain as with most Kindle books. For me, this Poe compendium gives the opportunity to revisit all the stories I read many years ago at a price that is unbeatable. I don't regret the choice and am happy to stop agonizing over it.
I mainly wanted to give my review on the digital Kindle version of this book since at this point you know how good Edgar Allan Poe is from all the other reviews on this book. This is well worth the small price you pay for it!
I have a nice hard cover edition of Poe's complete works but it is quite thick and heavy so it's almost impossible to take any where to read so it is so awesome to have all of his works on my Kindle. If you love Poe, you can't be unhappy with this.
After seeing some of the other reviews, I am puzzled about the complaints with the navigation system. My edition on a Fire 6 has an alphabetical listing of the titles with a link to the first page in each story and a separate list of contents, obtainable by swiping from the left edge to the center of the screen, also with links to the first pages. The navigation does lack book marks, or, at least, I can't find how to book mark a page. One person found this helpful. There are a number of Poe Complete Works available for the Kindle, some free, some more than the 99 cents I paid for this one.
I have loved Poe stories since I was very young and have always wanted a complete works. I chose this version because I can go to the Table of Contents and click on the story or poem that I want to read. It also has some biographical information at the beginning that includes press releases written at the time of Poe's untimely death.
This was an impulse buy while I was watching the movie "The Raven" which is a fictional account of Poe's last days. I recommend the movie, by the way. The Kindle book loaded in no time and it's easy for me to go back to the Table of Contents on my Kindle Fire just by swiping the bar at the bottom of the screen back to the beginning. There are no illustrations or pictures of Poe with this Kindle version but I didn't care about that some versions have that feature but it costs more. If you love Poe's writings and want a complete works that is easy to navigate and costs very little, this is the version for you.
